This is definitely a good time for businesses to begin looking into subscription models as many are having their current business models flipped upside-down anyway and will have to choose new options or shut down. The only problem I see that might be an obstacle for startups is that providing certain goods at scale with a subscription model is cost-intensive, especially during the early phases. For example, a small auto dealership can maintain a small inventory and recoup cost from each vehicle sold upon sale, whereas selling this as a service would require a large investment in vehicles, not to mention maintenance thereof, which might not see ROI for months or years. Of course, those with the financial backing to set these arrangements up can earn a fortune in the long haul, but the barrier to entry is too high for many small businesses which operate on JIT principles with limited cash at hand.
